Q & A: Degree options and exam advice

  • I am interested in the Healthcare Information/Administration field. I currently have a Bachelors in Business and am wondering if I need to obtain another degree, focusing on Healthcare Administration?

This will be dependent upon whether you are going for another Bachelors degree or a Masters degree and also if you are going to choose either Health Information or Healthcare Administration.  There is a difference in studies/courses for these two fields.  If you have a Bachelors in Business, you may be able to transfer more credits to a Masters Program for Healthcare Administration.  I would research both degrees and both fields, and see where you Business degree would have more impact with credit transfer.

  • I am currently a Senior Health Information Management student graduating in August of this year and I want to take the RHIA Examination around July or August of this year. I’m not sure where to start my preparation in order to be ready for the exam. What are some of the best guides to use, what books should I be reviewing, and what other resources would help?

A great place to start is on AHIMA’s website, and check out their review guide for the RHIA exam.  You also can check local programs to see if anyone is running a review class for the exam.  Check with your instructors and or Program Director at your school for the best guides.  You can also network on the Student CoP on AHIMA’s website for information.

I have an Associate Applied Science Degree in Medical Office Technology, Bachelors of Business Administration Degree with concentration in Healthcare Management and a Master of Business Administration Degree with concentration in Healthcare Managment. I am not certified; however, I wish to get a certification but not sure which area I shall the certification in (i.e. RHIT, RHIA). I have worked in the health care arena for 14years. I have worked in Patient Admission, ER Admission, Scheduling, Insurance Verification, Account Research for bad debt accounts, but only 1 year in medical records department. I feel I still need an update on billing, coding, and transcription; which I have a degree for that when I received my "medical office technology" AAS Degree. I really don't want a career I may either work from home or travel a bit. I know certification will be key and a major factor in the decision. I will love to teach RHIT, Medical Office Technology and RHIA programs or simply get a job in one of these areas. However, I look forward to suggestions from you in which direction will be best for me.
